Polypropylene (PP), Polietheresulfone (PES) or ceramic material?

Nowadays technology offers to wine producers many solutions for the tangential filtration process, starting from different type of membranes.

Within this post we want to clarify the technical characteristics and pros&cons of each one of them.

Polypropylene (PP): particularly suitable for red wine filtration, while they are not considerable for hot temperature filtration. The first investment costs are medium in the category. Maximum filtration temperature is 40°C.

Polietheresulforone (PES):  particularly suitable for white wine filtration, not considerable for hot temperature filtration. The first investment costs are low, and the maximum filtration working temperature is 40°C.

Ceramic membranes: they offer the possibility of filtering at hot temperature, sterilizing with steam and filtering dense products. Thanks to their technical characteristics they permit a longer guarantee in duration and a bigger filtration differential. The first investment cost is high compared to the PP and PES solutions.

Each customer can choose the most suitable membrane for himself

In conclusion we can say that PP membranes are more suitable for tangential filtration process of red wines, while PES membranes are better for white wines.

Ceramic membranes, instead, represent the best solution for wines with high content of solids in suspension.
